E-COMMERCE FAQ

Naming A Website

Do I need a .com name or is .net OK?

In most cases your first, second, third, fourth, fifth ... tenth name idea is already registered with a .com extension. So, if one of top choices is available with a .net extension, then you should definitely consider it. The only reason not to get something with an extension other than .com is when the .com is one of your competitors. You don't want your potential visitors going to your competition.

For example, your first choice for your art gallery is paintbrush.com, but it's taken by a paint store. Go ahead and register paintbrush.net. If visitors end up at the paintbrush.com by mistake, they'll know they are in the wrong place and check the domain name they entered and try .net. Search Engine Listings

How does my website get listed in Google and Yahoo?

There are two type of listing in Google and Yahoo search pages. One is called "natural" and the other is "sponsored" or "Pay Per Click" (PPC). As the name implies, you pay to be listed in the "sponsored" listings. The position of a listing is determined by a bidding process. That is, the high bidder gets the highest, best position.

The "natural" listings are based on many factors, which Google and Yahoo do not completely reveal. Three primary factors include web page content, website popularity and age of website. There is nothing you can do about the age of your website, it is what it is. However, there is a lot you can do to influence your position in search results based on web page content and website popularity.

What is Search Engine Optimization?

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is a process to increase website traffic by getting your web page listed at or near the #1 position on a search engine results page.

For example, when someone googles "e-commerce checklists" thousands of web page links are displayed, 10 on each page. The objective of search engine optimization is to get your web page to the #1 position on the first page of the results, so more people see and click on the link to your web page. The process is based on a combination of content and technology.
